Matching a Weeping Cherry
The two varieties people usually compare are Prunus subhirtella ‘Pendula Rosea’ and Prunus serrulata ‘Cheal’s Weeping’. Subhirtella has fine, soft branches that hang almost straight down and single, pale pink flowers. Cheal’s has stiffer, more arching branches and heavier double pink flowers. If your surviving tree has single flowers and a curtain-like shape, it is almost certainly a subhirtella type. Double pompom flowers point to Cheal’s. We compare the two trees in person, then source advanced stock with a similar graft height and canopy spread. Where possible, we visit the grower to choose the best match.
